Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca) is a vigorous, scrambling perennial wildflower native to the UK. It produces striking clusters of bluish-purple pea-like flowers from early summer into autumn and is well known for its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. Commonly found in meadows, woodland edges, roadsides, and rough grassland, Tufted Vetch is a valuable species for biodiversity enhancement and pollinator support.
This fast-growing species is ideal for wildflower meadows and grassland mixtures, adding height, colour, and texture to planting schemes. Its ability to climb over other vegetation makes it especially useful for naturalistic displays and wildlife corridors. Tufted Vetch is a favourite of bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, and its root nodules help improve soil fertility over time.
