SoluForm Concrete Filled Bagwork provides a cost-effective, environmentally responsible solution for underwater and above water concrete placement applications. Designed specifically for contractors, engineers, and specialists working on waterways, rivers, bridges, retaining walls, and ground reinforcement, these prefilled bags combine high-performance concrete with patented biodegradable or water-soluble liners.
Each bag is filled with high-quality dry mix concrete inside a traditional hessian bag, lined either with a biodegradable liner for underwater use or a water-soluble liner for above water or dry placements. The liners break down naturally, leaving behind only durable concrete blocks—no waste enters the watercourse.
Each bag contains a high-strength 32N concrete mix, carefully pre-measured and filled within a natural hessian outer bag lined with either:
Biodegradable liners for underwater placement, enabling direct placement in submerged conditions while preventing contamination of the watercourse.
Water-soluble liners for above water or out-of-water applications, dissolving quickly on contact with water to allow hydration of the concrete mix on-site.
The bags form uniform, durable blocks with typical dimensions of 500 x 250 x 100mm and a weight of approximately 20kg per block, facilitating easy manual handling without the need for specialist plant or pumping equipment.
Benefits:
Biodegradable and environmentally friendly: Both hessian bags and liners degrade naturally, leaving only solid concrete without polluting waterways.
Safe and efficient: Pre-filled bags eliminate onsite mixing, reducing dust, manual handling risks, and labor time.
Versatile application: Suitable for underwater, near water, and dry ground conditions across a wide range of civil engineering and environmental projects.
Durable, high-strength concrete: 32N structural-grade mix ensures long-term performance for high-value or vulnerable assets.
Consistent size and shape: Allows for reliable, repeatable blockwork assembly.
No specialist skills or equipment required: Can be placed by hand or with minimal mechanical aid.
Carbon neutral: Full Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certified by BRE.
Typical Uses
Riverbank and watercourse protection against scour and erosion
Retaining walls and structural underpinning
Bridge abutments and headwalls
Void filling and foundation repair
Flood defence structures
Environmental remediation and landscaping works
Assembly Instructions / How to Use SoluForm Concrete Bagwork
1. Before Placement
Store bagwork palletised, wrapped, and protected from moisture or damage until use.
Inspect bags for damage before use; damaged bags should not be used underwater but dry concrete can be salvaged for refilling.
Gently loosen dry mix inside bags by rolling or squeezing before placement.
2. Placement of Underwater Bagwork
Carry bags individually by hand through the watercourse to the target location, avoiding snagging or tearing on sharp objects.
Place bags horizontally, building in rows with alternating or cross bonding patterns for strength.
After placing the second or third row, insert galvanised steel rebar pins vertically through the bags to tie blockwork and create hydration pathways.
Pins should be inserted every two rows, piercing multiple layers of bags for structural integrity.
Hydration occurs naturally as water penetrates bags through steelwork, with full hardening in 6-12 hours and full strength reached after 28 days.
Divers may deploy bags from 1-ton bulk bags underwater, removing and placing individual bags by hand.
3. Placement of Above Water Bagwork Away from Watercourse
Pre-soak bags in a water bath for approximately 15 minutes to dissolve the water-soluble liner and hydrate the concrete mix.
Remove bags from water bath, allow excess water to drain, and carry to placement site by hand or wheelbarrow.
Place bags horizontally, using alternating or cross bonding to build rows.
Use steel rebar pins as necessary for medium to long-term installations or where structural strength/scour protection is required.
If placing dry, water bags thoroughly with hoses for at least 3 minutes per row, avoiding runoff into watercourses unless controlled and approved.
4. Placement of Above Water Bagwork Close to a Watercourse
Follow pre-soaking and careful placement protocols as above.
Avoid carrying pre-soaked bags through watercourses to minimize environmental risk and safety hazards.
Use steel pins to enhance blockwork stability, especially for flood or vandalism protection.
Dispose of any used soak water responsibly, as it may contain high pH and dissolved liner residues.
Steelwork Integration
Galvanised U-shaped mild steel rebar pins (typically 300mm long)(sold separately) are supplied to tie bags together into a cohesive, monolithic structure.
Steel pins improve durability, protect against scour, and enhance structural performance.
Custom sizes and grades are available on request with lead time.
Environmental and Safety Considerations
No waste or foreign material enters the watercourse during or after placement.
No pumping or grout mixing required, reducing risk of water pollution and damage to aquatic life.
Biodegradable liners and natural hessian bags reduce long-term environmental footprint.
Suitable for projects requiring carbon neutral materials and certified EPD compliance.
SoluForm Concrete Filled Bagwork is the reliable, sustainable, and user-friendly solution for concrete placement in and around watercourses, providing contractors and engineers with a high-performance product that protects both infrastructure and the environment.
